Marketing Your Green Building
Going green with your building is not just helping the environment – it’s also boosting your public image.
Here are some tips for leveraging your brand through your green building project:
Start with your local community.
- Educate the community on how your green building benefits them.
- Send out postcards to highlight the project.
- Host an open house with tours of your building — it’s a great opportunity to tell your story to the community. Don’t forget to invite the local media and community leaders.
Incorporate the web.
- Use the Internet to highlight the project and its green elements – call out the project on your web site with pictures, background information, statistics, stories, quotations and your corporate principles.
Utilize your employees.
- Educate every employee about the building’s green elements, making each one a green expert with your customers.
- Offer incentives for employees who live a green lifestyle, ie: rewards for using alternative transportation to get to work.
- Utilize employee testimonials about what it means to work in a green building (health, productivity, etc.)
Tell the media.
- Send press releases to your local media and trade publications (See a sample release here.)
- Direct them to your web site for further information about the project. Consider posting a video tour.
Make sure every visitor knows.
- Post signs around your building by your energy-efficient elements (ie: “This low-flowing toilet saves XX gallons of water a year.”)
Create a green dashboard.
- Measure statistics on saved energy, money, etc. Compare and contrast your building to a non-green building. Multipurpose these stats online, in employee newsletters, in your marketing materials, in your PR efforts or anywhere else you tell your green story.
